How do Florida felons get their voting rights back after 20 years?
It was my dad and like I said it was 20 years ago and since then he has never even received a speeding ticket! It was for grand theft auto! His girlfriend was at a bar with another man and he took her car while she was inside the bar and hide it for a few days! He was young and stupid and wrong! He did the crime and did his time! Now 20 years later he wants his rights back and has asked me to help him find out how!

Without knowing the nature of the felony, it’s difficult to say.

Some individuals convicted of non-violent felonies are re-enfranchised automatically by the Clemency Board upon completion of their full sentence, including payment of fines and fees. Individuals who have previously been convicted of certain felonies such as murder, assault, child abuse, drug trafficking, arson, etc. are not eligible for automatic voting restoration. Individuals convicted of such crimes may apply to the governor for clemency to ask that the ability to vote be restored.

Grand theft auto is not listed as one of the felonies where voting rights are permanently revoked. If he has no other criminal record, his voting rights should have been restored a few years back when Florida’s laws changed. Your dad should contact your local ACLU office for assistance as so many county officials in Florida remain unaware or confused about the changes.
