“That place reminded me? of a cult.”

I thought the same thing before I even saw your comment!?

  • Natalie Thomas says:

The rehab place was based on a program ran by Virgil Miller Newton. Although he did help kids off drugs, there were claims of abuse and neglect. One girl who was a frequent runaway but did not drink or do drugs was sent to this program for 10 years with no psychological evaluation. At the end of the ten years, it was discovered she was? bipoloar. She sued and won 5 million bucks.
Eventually all of Newton’s programs were shut down.

  • Natalie Thomas says:

There is one thing I truly love about this movie, and that the message is it is not the parents fault for their child’s addiction. The child made the choice to try drugs, not the parents. And most? importantly, parents must never give up on their kids.

  • ChannelingusLLCIM says:

If you think about it, what determines such outcomes in our society (academic success, law abiding etc)? Parental involvement. Social pathologies that hurt families rose to record proportions in the 80’s, kids living in single parent homes, parents putting the? responsibility for monitoring their school work on the teachers, this all results in the child taking the path of least resistance – C’s or D’s.

  • ChannelingusLLCIM says:

you had a different family environment which is why you met with success, your father was in education and? stressed it to you when you were young, monitored your academics. But we also know that divorce reached an all time high when Generation X were teens, it hit 50% and the term “latch-key” was coined.
