Florida Exfelons and Restoration of Civil Rights. Feb. 3, 2008

Gov. Crist and Presidential candidate Obama talked with lawmakers today concerning a recent bill that gave exfelons in Florida there Restoration of Civil Rights. Only 127,000 exfelons had there rights restored out of Florida’s 3.9 million people marked as an exfelon.The individuals that did receive their rights back where mostly white. ACLU Lobbyist argue that 87 % of restored exfelons are white, and that 13 % are minorities .
Exfelons are not allowed to work for Waste Management which employ’s garbage men in Florida due to Florida’s Dept. Of Environmental agency laws. Prisoners can be seen daily cutting the grass off Florida highways but once they are released from prison these men and women will not be allowed to cut grass for the city or work at a city sewage plant.
Out of Florida’s 3.9 million exfelons ,1.2 million have children many of these men and women have lost there Equal Housing Rights, Have no insurance, are unable to get jobs at :Construction sites ,Supermarkets ,gas stations and daily labor sweat shops.
Florida’s crime rate has not decreased according to Human Rights Watch; criminals are just becoming more dangerous and becoming more organized due to stiff prison sentences handed out. Human Rights Watch has reported that 79% of Florida’s released inmates return back to Florida prisons within 19 months .A study was done by Joel Best who is a Professor and chair of Sociology and criminal justice at the University of Delaware, his studies showed that there are five main reasons many exfelons return back to crime and prison, No employment, No housing, Drug Abuse, Child Support Payments, and Murder. According to Joel Best by 2015 our prison population will almost triple.
